With smartphone penetration over 70% penetration, many end users are on there second or third smartphone. However, millions around the world have never even seen one smartphone. Your old device today may become someone's access to the internet tomorrow.
In the circular economy, we move away from this idea that mobile electronics can be just thrown in a kitchen or desk drawer and forgot about once you are done with that phone.
In order to do this, carriers, working with OEMs and other providers, have to make buyback programs easier to use, ensure information stored on the old device can be transferred and provide effective incentives to encourage participation.
If this is done right, we can reduce e-waste and send used and idle smartphones to areas around the world that really need them, instead of to our kitchen drawers.
